Cirrus SR22 Parachute Accident in Santa Barbara, California

A Cirrus SR22, registered N124LZ and operated by LIMA ZULU AIRCRAFT CORP. CNN, crashed after impact on ground with 2 occupants nearby Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA/KSBA :us:) 2 days ago (Jan 29, 2025). Here’s what i know about it:

The SR22 took off from Santa Barbara at 1:51 PM (UTC -8) and began heading west along the coast.

It did a few turns and started heading back to the airport roughly 25 minutes after takeoff (as you can see in this screenshot).

The flight tracking shows what appears to be a go around on approach after the plane descended only 200ft (60.9 m) in line with runway 15R before climbing and turning around.
At this point, the SR22 was flying parallel to runway 15R, and this is when the crash occured.

Apparently, the plane began to nosedive and it deployed it’s parachute (CAPS: Cirrus Airframe Parachute System) in low altitude. Like that, it was only a few seconds from hitting the ground, so presumably, it didn’t fully deploy, making it impact the ground while on approach to Santa Barbara Municipal Airport.

It crashed on an open field just north of the Storke Road offramp on Highway 101, and after impact on the ground, it took roughly 2 minutes to catch fire, igniting nearby vegetation (that was quickly contained, thankfully). The SR22 suffered severe damage alone. Both occupants suffered severe injuries, but survived the crash.
The cause of the emergency remains unknown, so if you have any, reply it.
