PKN: 8.7 Earthquake Strikes Russia

An 8.7 earthquake has just struck off the coast of Eastern Russia at 18:24 UTC (6:24pm CT), close to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Tsunami Watches and Warnings have been issued in Alaska and Hawai’i.

The city (big city-ish) closest to the earthquake is Kodiak, Alaska. A Tsunami Advisory has been issued there.

The last earthquake close to this intensity was the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. (M9.1)

The entire U.S. West Coast has a Tsunami Watch. San Francisco to Los Angeles can experience the tsunami at 8:00 - 9:00PM Pacific Time. Some of the Seattle Bay Area can expect waves at 7:00PM Pacific Time.

A Tsunami WARNING has been issued for the entire state of Hawai’i. If you live in Hawai’i, please seek higher ground. Waves will reach Hawai’i at about 7:17PM HST, which is 4 hours from now.

An update has been released on wave heights. San Francisco will have wave heights of less than 1 ft, while Crescent City (Northern CA) will have wave heights of 3-6ft.

Tsunami Warnings are also in effect for Tohoku (Eastern Honshu) and along the Southern Coast of Japan until Osaka. Tsunami Warnings are also in effect for Eastern Hokkaido, Japan.
