Although I posted this in Hurricane News (sorry admins if this breaks the rules) and in General, I would appreciate more feedback on the scale.
I made this new scale because the Saffir-Simpson only takes into account wind. While this works well most of the time, there are times where it doesn’t, like for example Katrina’s landfall, which it was a Category 3 at the time, but it’s extremely low pressure created high storm surges, making Katrina the infamous monster that it was.
If pressure was included in the scale, there would be more accurate threat levels, conveying the threat of the hurricane better. According to my scale, which does include pressure, last time I checked Katrina would’ve had an index of approximately 4.9, which means it was a high-end Category 4 if pressure was in the scale and being used properly.
Scale:
- Saffir-Simpson scale (look it up, it’s the one currently used)
- Modern scale/index
