Technically, if it served after 1945, it was called the F-51. The Mustangs that served in Korea were re-designated from P-51 to F-51. But, you’re right. No one calls it that. Except for history nerds like me.

okay.

its because P stood for pursuit, but then was changed to F for Fighter.

Imagine if it didn’t change, we would have the P-22 and the P-14 :sob:
